One of the questions I’m often asked is, “Dinah, I’m just getting started. How do I get booked to speak?” Great question! Because most of the clients I work with are entrepreneurs and solo-professionals, I’ll target my answer to them.
There are thousands upon thousands of groups, including service organizations, professional organizations, Meetups, networking groups and more that are looking for guest speakers in cities and towns all over the world. There are thousands upon thousands of online and offline talk shows and teleseminars looking for guest experts all over the world. Speaking opportunities are UNLIMITED regardless of the topic you want to speak on.
Fortunately, speaker marketing and getting booked to speak is easier than you might think, and with a few of my best marketing strategies, your booking worries will soon turn into booking excitement. And, speaking for free is the fastest and most effective way to get started and propel your business into six figures and well beyond. Here are 3 surefire tips to get you headed in the right direction.
Send an email to your database (you may want to select some key people) letting them know you want to get out and speak more and you would appreciate any suggestions or referrals they might have. Include your topic and who a good audience would be for you. Most people love to help and if they know and like you already, they’ll do whatever they can to support you. (Make sure you thank them for making connections for you, too!)
Get on Meetup.com and explore all the groups in your area that are related to your field and in your target audience. Many of them have guest speakers or would welcome a guest speaker if the topic is relevant. Simply shoot the organizer a message to introduce yourself and open the dialog.
Every time you go to a business networking function, let people know that you are looking for places to speak and ask if they can make a speaking referral. (By the way, this is a great way to promote your business without obviously promoting your business.) Again, people love to help and that’s exactly what networking is for – making supportive connections.
Once you get the ball rolling you’ll build momentum. Every time you speak (assuming you do a great job) you’ll get more and more referrals from audience members and event hosts.
Of course to get booked easily and with the professionalism that makes you stand out from other entrepreneurs who speak, you’ll want to know exactly who your ideal audience is so you can focus your time and energy getting in front of the right audience. You’ll also want to have a hot bio, attention-getting talk title and a talk summary that makes an event host say, “We’d love to have you!”
If you’re nervous about emailing or picking up the phone and calling a speaker coordinator, You might want to write out a script to help you break the ice and ask for the gig, too. That way you don’t have to wing anything and you can relax and be present.
Don’t have all that stuff and don’t want to spend a lot of time figuring it out on your own? My Speak NOW Home Study Course helps you put all those pieces together at your own pace, so you can get booked to speak with the confidence, ease and professionalism that makes you shine.
By the way, if you’re already speaking but you’re not getting those referrals or new business, contact me for a complimentary Strategy Session. Because if you keep making the same mistakes and never find out why they don’t refer you or buy your offer, you will keep losing business and leaving money on the table. Better to get it figured out and handled quickly than flounder and walk away disappointed!
For my Denver Metro area subscribers, my colleague, Joe Sabah, has put together a database of over 680 service and professional organizations you can pick up to make getting booked in this area even easier. Click the link and tell him I sent you.
