I’ve heard A LOT of speaker trainers talk about how to sell from the stage when you are public speaking, and they usually talk about things like having a powerful opening, a tight closing and great content in the middle. I agree with all of that. Having a well-crafted talk and high-value content is essential to making a greater impact and converting sales.
Having great connection and delivery skills is super important, too. If you can’t connect and engage your audience, you might as well hand them an outline because they’ve checked out in their mind anyway. And if you’re boring, have distracting mannerisms or rely on PowerPoint, nobody wins because your audience won’t be able to focus on your message – no matter how profound it is!
But behind the curtains, there is more at play that makes some rise to the top and others not, regardless of how good a speaker one is, and most speaker trainers and coaches miss or neglect these important factors. I would even argue that the 3 secrets I am revealing to you are just as important as speaking prowess and essential to your success whether you speak or not.
The 3 secrets you must know to rise to the top in your field and get more clients are your: Unique Transformational Systems, Compelling Offers and Expert Positioning. These elements are the backbone of any service-based business, without which, the business will chronically struggle or even collapse.
Making them way more magnetic and marketable, I insist on my clients building serious muscle in these areas. It gives them the ability to stand out and be far more successful selling from the podium, as well as in all their marketing and sales conversations. I want to give you a snapshot of them in this 3-part series to get you looking at and thinking about your business from a different perspective and then let you know how you can take the next step with me to discover and use these to turbo charge your speaking and propel your business.
It is immensely helpful and profitable to identify what I call your Unique Transformational System or UTS for short. Your UTS is like a blueprint for your clients’ success. It’s how you get them from point A to point B (the transformation) with your unique style and approach. When I work with clients on this, I take them through my 5 step process that hones in on exactly how their clients get great results and then together we organize and frame it in such a way as to be repeatable, memorable and monetizable.
More than a unique selling proposition, your UTS is a form of branding. It’s invaluable to your business in that it sets you apart from the masses of other service providers in the same field, provides you with an endless source of products, programs and services, and enhances your expert positioning – all of which help you convert way more sales. This process alone often takes my clients from being indistinguishable and one-dimensional in the services they offer to standing out with a whole range of sizzling product and service offerings.
But often people say to me, “Dinah, I don’t have a process or system. I just do what I do and my clients love it.” Or “I’m new at what I’m doing. I don’t have a process yet.” Trust me. You do. And you are sitting on a gold mine. You’re just too close to it to see it or you haven’t asked yourself the right questions to discover it.
Let me walk you through a simple example. I had a client in one of my training programs who was an electrician putting together a Signature Talk on electrical safety. He wanted to use the talk and his content as part of his corporate training program proposal for the company he works for, as well as take it on the road to other companies in related industries.
During the course he identified the ultimate outcome for participants, identified all the safety elements he wanted to cover, organized them into a logical grouping of steps and gave them the acronym – ARC – (which is meaningful to electricians) to make his talk memorable and brand-able. Six months later, after getting the okay for his proposal and teaching his course within his company, he is now getting rave reviews and being invited to teach his ARC program for other organizations – paid of course!
You can do this on your own but it can be challenging to step outside of what you do as second nature to see your brilliance with fresh, objective eyes. I have found that most of my clients have never looked at their process for helping their clients get results. Or some can identify the process they take people through but they don’t know how to organize it, systemize it or capitalize on it in their presentations, marketing and sales.
If you are one of those people who likes to do things in your own way and in your own time and you are okay with taking your chances on results, I completely understand and honor that. I used to be the same way. But if you are someone who likes to get results faster and are willing to get help with your blind spots, I want to let you know about a program I’ve put together so you can put this and the other two secrets into play right away to start rising to the top in your field and converting more of your 1:1, group and online audience into sales and clients.
