In our goal-oriented culture and push for “success” it’s easy to overlook or discount all the gems of personal growth and insight that happen along the journey. Sure we all want the coveted markers of what we call success or achievement, but unless those achievements are connected to something deeper and more meaningful, we are left feeling empty or still wanting even if we get what we want.
So here is an unusual assignment to help you tap into the well of your feelings and true desires to pull you forward into 2014 with healthy dose of inspiration that will compliment your drive.
Giving Yourself An “A”
I invite you to write a letter dated as if you are at the end of 2014, which begins with the words, “Dear (self/Inner Wise One/God/your personal mentor – whoever feels right to you), I got an ‘A’ because…”
In this letter you are to tell, in detail, the story of what will have happened to you by the end of the year that is in line with this extraordinary grade. Everything must be written in past tense and specifically address the person you will have become by the completion of the year.
You can focus it on a specific area like your relationship with your partner, children, or co-workers / your business / a class, training or program you are taking / or any other area of your life. You can also do this for your life in general.
But note…this is not about achievements as much as it is about the attitudes, feelings and outlook of someone who has done or become all that she wanted. I want you to fall deeply in love with the person you are describing in the letter.
You can also do this in retrospect as a reflection and acknowledgement of what actually happened, but the real power and juice is in creating from nothing and then living into it going forward.
I’d love to see your letters, too, if you’d like to share. You can send them to firstname.lastname@example.org.
