In my experience as a Business and Public Speaking Coach, one of the hardest things for service-based entrepreneurs to loosen their grip on is the FIO/DIY mentality (Figure It Out/Do It Yourself). Lots of folks take great pride in that approach and build a fortress around their “reasons” for doing it that way (lack of money is the most common one).
But the reality is that FIO/DIY keeps you constantly overworked, underpaid, neglecting your genius and struggling to get by.
If you’ve been on that hamster wheel for a while and you aren’t getting to where you want to go at a pace that supports the lifestyle you desire, it might be time – dare I say it – to get help.
But how do you decide what’s best for you?
With my Speak to Profit Live Intensive Training starting on October 25th in Boulder, CO, I know some of you are feeling this tension – wanting in, but unsure you are making the right decision.
Perfect timing to explore this topic of when-to-get-help decisions (or any decision for that matter)!
And I’ve made it easier for you by distilling my own process into 4 factors shaped and influenced by my uber successful coach, Kendall SummerHawk, mentors and colleagues, as well as my own experience helping others reach their goals.
These 4 factors will help you balance logic with intuition, reduce your inner turmoil and free up your energy to make a conscious, inspired decision.
How DO You Make a Decision with Clarity and Grace?
Here are the 4 factors that deserve your loving attention:
Whether you are the creative type or highly logical, you need to gather some very practical information so you know exactly what the decision is that needs to be made.
So, on a truth-telling level…
- What is the problem you are trying to solve?
- What affect is it having on you physically, mentally, spiritually, your relationships, etc.?
- What is the outcome you want?
- And what are your options for reaching the outcome? (Aim for 3.)
And it may also be helpful to consider the minimum you would need to receive in return to make your investment worthwhile, which leads into the next factor…
Making a decision based on logic alone may seem rational and appear to minimize risk, but without balancing it with other factors like values, information-based decisions can drag out your research, delay decisions, and create a chasm between your heart and your head. Not good.
Your personal values play a major role in the quality of your decision-making. So ask yourself:
- How important is solving this problem to me?
- What would this make possible in my life or business?
- And…Am I willing to invest my dollars to reflect and honor this value?
In my work, for example, the transformations that occur are enormous, but can be subtle at first. Sometimes tangible results show up quickly and dramatically. (I’ve had clients earn more than double their investment back in their first talk.)
And other times the initial metamorphosis happens on a deeply personal level – a greater sense of self-worth and confidence, for example – that makes way for external change.

Once you are clear on the value of the transformation, how it solves your problem, and what it makes possible in your life or business, the decision is just about made for you.
Intuition is a powerful internal compass. However, relying on intuition alone, even though it may feel right and create excitement in the moment, can put you out of balance with logic and values, as well as take you off course and scatter your focus.
Here’s where you need to take a deep breath, feel into your body and listen to the Wisdom within – noticing…
- Deep inside you, is there a person who refuses to be kept deep inside you?
- Is this something you have been asking for, openly or secretly for a long time?
- Do you feel and trust this step will move you forward in that process?
With the right opportunity, you feel the energy to say yes.
Feeling some fear? Sometimes the right opportunity feels scary and hairy. I can’t think of a single transformation I’ve experienced without having to walk through some fear. The question is, can you feel the fear and still know that investing in you is the right thing to do?
- Are you ready to RECEIVE the good that you say you want?
- Are you willing to lovingly loosen your grip on trying to figure everything out on your own and accept help?
- Do you want the transformation deeply enough to be resourceful with your time, energy and resources to make it happen?
When I walked through my own fear and invested in a 5 figure coaching program, I put it on my credit card and made a commitment to myself to implement quickly enough to pay it off completely within 3 months. I did it and had plenty to spare!
Are you ready and willing to apply the value of the investment going forward?
There is no right or wrong here. But acknowledging what is true for you in each of these areas will help you make your self-investment decision coming from a place of grounded clarity and inspiration and you will likely have a very powerful return on your investment, both internal and external.
And coming from this balanced framework, you can relax into your decision and know that you are not only wisely investing your dollars, but also your mind, heart, energy, and time.
Now THAT is how to make a decision with clarity and grace!
