A lot has been written on the subject of success and what it takes to be successful. And although success can mean something different from one person to the next, we can generally agree that it means a higher than average level of achievement in some area.
Not to be confused with Stephen R Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” Jay Abraham, “America’s #1 Marketing Wizard,” spells out the top characteristics of highly successful people in the area of business. I’ve paraphrased to capture the essence of what he has observed to be the most consistent and essential traits.
Read on to see if you have what it takes. If you find yourself lacking in a particular area, don’t be discouraged! There is hope for you!
#1. They are enormously curious and interested in things outside their business sphere that they don’t know about. In other words, they love to learn.
#2. They are passionate about what they are doing. They focus their time and energy on activities that feed their soul, match their values and fulfill their purpose. (By the way, successful people watch little or no TV.)
#3. They are externally focused – driven to help other people be the best they can be. They want to make a BIG difference in the world.
#4. They have a keen sense of how much more is possible. They dwell in possibility and never settle for mediocrity.
#5. They have an understanding of their limited time on earth. They make the most of everything and they are disciplined and systemized in pursuing their goals.
#6. They never stop growing. They constantly invest in their professional and personal development, applying what they’ve learned and expanding their comfort zone.
#7. They are not constrained by conventional thinking. They are willing and able to think outside the box to find new solutions and new ways of doing things.
If you are normal, you’re probably noticing a gap or two. Rather than beat yourself up about it, do what the most successful people do that Abraham doesn’t mention in this list – GET HELP! Surround yourself with others who can fill in the missing elements – a mastermind group, a virtual assistant, a coach – so you can focus and build on what you do and love best. Nobody reaches a high level of success on their own. It takes a team and you get to create it!
