I sometimes laugh at myself for choosing a profession that tackles two of the biggest fears most people have – public speaking and selling. Fortunately, I’ve never been someone who shies away from a good challenge and have built up a healthy cushion of resiliency. With a ton of real life successes and failures in these two areas, I can completely relate to where my clients are coming from and going to.
Typically, the emerging experts I work with struggle with one or more of the following three stuck points when it comes to making an offer (aka – selling) when they are speaking at the front of their own or someone else’s room (or even in a 1:1 conversation for that matter):
1. They don’t want to sound sales-y or pushy. They don’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable, especially themselves.
2. They are afraid of rejection. What if it doesn’t work? What if they pour their heart and soul into the presentation and their audience says “no?” (Oh, how we can make “no” mean such terrible things about ourselves!)
3. They are afraid of acceptance. They wonder, “If the audience says “yes,” do I deserve the business? Can I really deliver the result they want and is what I have to offer really that valuable?”
But here is the crux of the problem…
…But you want to speak because you feel a calling to touch way more lives than you ever have before and you know it’s the fastest way to go from invisible to visible and blow the ceiling off your income…
…But you don’t want to be rejected.
I wish I could just say “Snap out of it!” like Cher in the movie “Moonstruck” and have that be enough to create the shift you need. But you’ve got some layers of conditioning and non-supportive beliefs to re-frame and it takes a little more effort than that.
AND, it’s imperative that you get accustomed to it, because it’s nearly impossible to build a successful business and rise to expert status without getting comfortable, even great at selling and speaking.
When I work with people 1:1, I address this issue with a 5 part process designed to fast-track their comfort and ease with speaking and selling from the stage. The first and most important part in the process is developing the right mindset.
I give people a questionnaire to assess their beliefs about selling and help them re-frame any that are non-supportive. We then craft a Speak with Heart Code of Ethics to be a constant reminder of the conscious values and integrity they bring to the speaking platform and every sales conversation.
The bottom line is…
There are people who need what you’ve got – maybe even desperate for what you’ve got. They could be an inch from dropping off the face of the earth or an inch from gold, and what you’ve got to offer could make all the difference in their lives.
But you have to tell them about what you’ve got and ask them to make a decision!
