You meet someone at a networking event or conference who is intrigued by what you do and they ask you if you would come and give a presentation to their group. (Gasp!)
You nervously say "sure" because you know it's good for your business, but inside you're sweating bullets at the thought of getting up in front of real live people and, OMG, speaking! You climb into your car to head back to the office and say, "Holy #@*x! What did I just agree to?! I'm petrified of public speaking! What am I going to do? What am I going to say? What if I blow it and make a fool of myself?!"
YOU ARE PERFECTLY NORMAL!!!
And here's what it means without your mental spin on it…
That's right. You care about the experience and the learning the audience or participants have with you. And that is a good thing. The fear simply offers you information and if you breathe and reflect on that information, you'll be able to choose from a number of different strategies for addressing it.
To recap last week, I introduced the three primary strategies for conquering public speaking fear:
2.) Re-programming Beliefs and
Taking Action in spite of the fear (covered last week in Part 1) is the quickest and most useful means to conquer fear and that's why I place it in the number one spot.
Reprogramming Beliefs is probably the second quickest and less intense way to conquer public speaking fear.
In the not-so-distant past, we used to think that fears and phobias required long and in-depth psychoanalysis to understand and overcome. These days there are a number of technologies and energy-release methodologies that allow people to break through fear barriers in minutes or days rather than months or years or even never.
The two technologies I find the most helpful are Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Neuro-Musical Mind Conditioning (N-MMC). NLP is about using language, physiology and imagery to eliminate, change and reprogram beliefs, as well as managing your emotional states for empowered living. N-MMC is about using music, language and movement to achieve the same result.
Those who have succeeded at the highest levels of any endeavor, including speaking, have used the power of their thoughts and beliefs to overcome fear and achieve great results. For me personally, when I notice fearful thinking, I take a moment to let the fear inform me. From that awareness, I can consciously choose to reprogram the non-supportive belief so it no longer has a grip on me and I can move forward in a powerful and confident way.
***This week, on August 12, George Ira Carroll, a Master Certified NLP Coach and I will be co-facilitating a one-day workshop to help you break through fears and limited thinking using these technologies. It's a perfect opportunity to apply the strategies of Action and Re-Programming Beliefs to conquer public speaking fear (or whatever limiting thought patterns you have).
