You’ve probably heard the maxim “What gets measured gets done” or “What gets measured gets improved.” I have a third maxim “What gets measured gets maximized and monetized.”
According to those highly successful experts at the business seminar I mentioned at the beginning of this e-zine, the three primary areas of any successful business and the appropriate investment of time, energy and resources are:
Marketing – 60% (and as much as 80% in the beginning)
Administration – 20%
Production (creating or buying product) – 20%
While I consider myself a heart-centered, conscious entrepreneur intent on making a difference, I’m also a raving fan of results – both my own and my clients’. When I got back from that seminar last Spring, I MAP-ed out my business. I took a calculated look at my three key business areas and set about measuring my results. Those strategies and efforts that produced the best return on investment stayed in – everything else got pitched.
Want to take a guess at what consistently produces the best results without costing a dime? You got it…Public Speaking.
The bottom line is, the most effective marketing tool for your time, energy and pocketbook is your mouth. The greatest influence you have is when you speak in such a way that is music to their ears. What’s that SECRET INGREDIENT? (Drum roll please…)
It’s the word “you.” Ahhh, music to their ears!
So often I hear speakers say things like “I’ll be sharing…” “I’ll be teaching…” “I’m a ______ (insert profession).” It's all about themselves.
I used to do that, too, until I discovered that to get people to tune in and listen up, you have shift the focus to…all about them. “You’ll get…” “You’ll experience…” “You’ll walk away with…”
Are you spending the optimal ratio of time, energy and resources on the three key areas of your business? I invite you to “MAP” it out and calculate your return on marketing investments.
