Last week marked the first installment of a series of weekly posts to help you entrepreneurs and service professionals maximize your on-stage, on-video and face-to-face marketing efforts.

Again, it’s one thing to SAY “speak with heart” and another thing to DO “speak with heart.”
Today I’m going to cover the “E.” “E” is for Earn the Right – your right to speak about your subject as an authority.
There are essentially 3 ways that you can earn the right to speak with authority on your subject:
- Experience – your story of personal transformation, growth or adaptation
- Expertise – through years in your profession or number of clients served
- Education – formal (university/college), informal (books you’ve read, etc.), professional training (coursework related to your field)
One of the problems I often notice when I’m training, speaking or networking is that most people downplay or minimize themselves in the Earn the Right department. They think that they’re not qualified enough to be considered an expert or even an authority on a subject. But I’ve found those thoughts are actually a symptom of something deeper. And that “something deeper” is the fear of being seen as a fraud.
Did you know that if you read three books on a subject, you are considered an expert on that subject compared to most people?
We are our own worst enemies when it comes to building credibility in ourselves. To counteract this self-sabotoging tendency, I take my clients through a series of exercises to start chipping away at the myth of being a fraud. Seldom have I found that someone really needs to get more training or experience before they have truly earned the right.
Here are a few tips to help you “own” that you have earned the right:
- Take an exhaustive personal and professional inventory so you can see all of your accomplishments laid out before your very eyes.
- Recall all the accolades, awards and recognition you’ve received over your lifetime (yes, it all counts).
- Describe what makes you unique in your field – the things or ways of being that no one else does like you.
And finally, since it’s often hard for us to see our own glory, ask people who love you to sing your praises and remind you of all the ways in which you have more than earned the right to speak on your subject.
