If you want to maximize your marketing dollars and efforts, this is THE most important thing to "grock." If you want to make a difference in a lot more people's lives, start focusing on the "T" I'm referring to every time you speak, network, or use online video.
Regardless of where I go or who I'm speaking to, I can't stress the importance of this concept enough. It's so easy to forget if you're not paying close attention.
And that's what happens to many entrepreneurs and service professionals. They fall into the unfruitful habit of communicating about what they do, the services they provide and the features of all of that when they are out networking or speaking. Those elements are important but not until the conversation goes much deeper.
If you want to get the business growth (that's the selfish part) you desire from your marketing efforts, you have to speak almost entirely to what's in it for them, the Transformation that is possible (that's the selfless part) as an outcome of buying your services or products.
Let me ask you this. When you're planning a vacation, are you motivated and inspired by the idea of the experience (the Transformation) you'll have at the destination or by how you are going to get there (the product/service/features)? I thought so.
This may come as a shock to you, but guess what…it's not about you and how great your products/services are. It's about them and how their life or business will be better, happier, sexier, more productive, less stressful, more profitable, easier, healthier, etc., etc., etc.
By focusing on the Transformation in all of your communications, your audience is far more likely to tune in, listen up and buy from you. We all want to know "What's in it for me?" It's not that we're all on an ego trip. It's that our brains are wired to take note of stimuli that relates to us and that speaks to what we desire.
So go ahead! Be selfish by being selfless! It's a win-win for everyone!
